Steps to Having a Healthy Lawn

A Moment To Live, An Experience to be shared

From the perspective of your average homeowner, there are few things better than a nice, lush, healthy lawn to call your own- one that you can truly be proud of and that you cannot wait to show off to your friends, family members, and neighbors. One thing you may not realize, however, is that creating and maintaining a healthy lawn and landscape does not have to be as difficult as many might assume. You just have to keep a few key things in mind.

Get Rid of Those Weeds

According to the experts at DIYNetwork, weeds are often one of the major reasons why a lawn begins to die in the first place. While it is certainly true that a few weeds during the summer are inevitable, you should not let them overtake things or you will pay the price later. Either pull all weeds (including their nasty roots) by hand or, if things are already too unwieldy, use an herbicide to get the job done properly. Just make sure you do not use any harsh chemicals that will damage your lawn in the process.

It’s All About Aeration

Another one of the best ways to properly landscape your yard and maintain a healthy lawn is through strategic aeration. Pull out a small section of your lawn and take a close look at the roots. If they do not go down deeper than about two inches, your yard needs to be aerated as soon as possible.

Fertilize, Fertilize, Fertilize

Finally and perhaps most importantly, never overlook an opportunity to fertilize your lawn – especially during the spring and summer. The key to remember here is that there is no “one size fits all” approach to what you are doing. The type of fertilizer you should use will depend on both the soil you are working with and the type of grass you currently grow. If you have any questions about what type you should use, do not be afraid to call in the professionals.

For the best results, use a slow release and organic fertilizer at least once a year. You may have to mow your lawn more often after you do as it will grow faster, but this is not exactly the worst problem to have – particularly when your lawn looks as good as possible.
