Did you know that according to a recent study, over 200 kids drown in home swimming pools each year. At Proscape, we care about pool safety and want to help ensure that your summers are safe and fun for everyone. Here are a few safety guidelines to keep in mind around your pool.
Mind the Children
According to the experts at PoolSafely.gov, children need to start learning pool safety as soon as possible. First, never, under any circumstances, leave a child unattended either in or near the water. The importance of this cannot be overstated enough.
Next, always make an effort to teach your young children how to swim. Most communities offer summer swimming programs at their local YMCA, Recreational Center, or The American Red Cross. A little knowledge goes a long way when you are talking about swim safety.
In addition, be sure to teach your children how to both identify and stay away from any drains that are around the perimeter of the pool. You do not want them to fall and hurt themselves.
Do Not Forget About Your Barriers
According to the American Red Cross, another essential pool safety tip that you will want to adhere to involves securing your pool with all of the appropriate barriers. The pool itself should be totally surrounded by a fence that is at least four feet high. The fence should also have a self-closing, self-latching gate.
Whenever the pool is not in use, always make sure that you properly attach the safety cover to prevent any accidents while you are not around. This is especially true if you happen to have a hot tub somewhere in your yard. Likewise, remove any ladders or steps that may be used to access the pool once everyone has gone inside for the night.
To be on the absolute safe side, you should also consider installing some type of pool alarm that will go off to let you know that someone has tried to enter the pool while you were unaware.
Take Pool Safety Seriously
Finally, you should always establish (and ENFORCE) rules regarding pool safety behavior in your home. If your pool is not big enough for diving, let everyone know that diving is strictly prohibited. Everyone needs to know that you take pool safety seriously.
